0:00:02i my name is katrina comport i am research sociologist at the university of california
0:00:07san francisco and i'm to be talking today about the paper i haven't symbolic interaction
0:00:11in tactile misunderstanding abortion regret
0:00:14so it can do this project and of interest in the controversy over abortion regret
0:00:18and what it quickly discovered is that this is fundamentally a political controversy for political
0:00:22claims and there is a very image empirical research on this topic
0:00:27but so what i try to do in this paper is offer some empirical evidence
0:00:32about some the sources of emotional difficulty that women identify round they're abortion experiences a
0:00:38that so the first source that i found was social disapproval so the case where
0:00:43women for whom the decision to have an abortion and the experience proportion itself
0:00:48were entirely problematic and the difficulty that emerge for them came after the fact
0:00:53when they were confronted by people who were just to provide more judgemental of their
0:00:58decision
0:00:59and the second category i have is a romantic relationship lost these four women were
0:01:04appended by their partners when they discover they were pregnant and so their decision to
0:01:09have an abortion never be separated in their mind from the devastation experience from being
0:01:16a banded by partner
0:01:18identify the last category was women who talked about in their own more it had
0:01:22versus for conflict so this was an emotional conflict basically between a rational or practical
0:01:29assessment that in me and assign to their head an attachment that they felt pregnancy
0:01:34something the ascribed to their heart and that conflicts
0:01:38maybe the experience of pregnancy and then make the n portion decision the abortion itself
0:01:43and afterwards emotionally difficult and they show that for most of those women that last
0:01:49category they still not that the portion was the right decision you just
0:01:53where means something that was emotionally conflicted
0:01:56so this paper i able to add some stories winslet experience around abortion to supplement
0:02:03a lot of the political claims making that so far we characterized our discussion of
0:02:08abortion regret thank you have enjoyed paper
